Embassy Suites, Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania (directions)

Technical Vision, Inc. is an early-stage product development company that specializes in the design and manufacture of practical, affordable and easy-to-use electronic mobility aids for people with vision loss and physical impairments. Our devices incorporate innovative sensor technologies that perceive and warn of obstacles in the travel path that place the user at risk of tripping or falling.  In the U.S. alone, the number of people with vision loss due to natural aging and conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts is estimated at 12-15 million, and 65% of individuals with low vision are more than 50 years old.  Low vision profoundly affects the ability of the eyes to adjust to changes in lighting and glare that result in loss of depth perception and contrast sensitivity, thus increasing the risk of injury due to tripping and falling.  Falls are the leading cause of emergency room visits and injury among adults 65 years and older and cost the U.S. health care system billions of dollars annually.

The U.S. Market for assistive technologies, estimated at $40 Billion, encompasses the aging, able-bodied population as well as individuals with vision loss.  Approximately $4B is spent on daily vision-enhancing living aids (excluding eyeglasses).  Assistive technologies is an international growth market that will continue to increase as the world’s population lives longer and expects to remain independent, employed and physically and socially active.  Technical Vision works with low vision therapists, aging rehabilitation and occupational therapists, and orientation and mobility specialists to design and develop innovative and practical mobility aids to meet the increasing demand for new and better assistive devices to help users maintain independence, active lifestyles and good quality of life.

3 Major Issues

  1. Our products are exempt from premarket notification 510(k) under 21 CFR Part 886 and anticipated to be eligible for reimbursement.  We would like to better understand the reimbursement process and how to go about obtaining eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance reimbursement.

  2. Our strategy is to market and sell our products internationally through professional channels to therapists, service organizations and government agencies rather than through retail channels.   We would like to have a discussion about pros and cons of both of these approaches.

  3. We are developing our lead product, a joint invention with a local university, under a cooperative research agreement.  We would like some advice on how to structure the terms of a commercial license agreement.  The company is paying all development and patent costs.
