"Death
by Grapefruit Juice!"
Speaker: Lynn Mandia Childs
MEET
THE SPEAKER:
We
all know Lynn as a charter member of PCCI and our Treasurer since
we formed. We certainly appreciate her dedication.
During her 22 years at SmithKline, Lynn held positions in Consumer
Financial and Market Research (Menley & James, a subsidiary),
as well as Pharmaceutical Market Research, Government Health Policy
Affairs, Strategic Planning and Product Marketing. At retirement
in 1989 from SK&F, Lynn was A Senior Marketing Manager.
On retirement, she formed VALLEY FORGE MARKETING CONSULTANTS and
has predominently specialized in the marketing of psychiatric and
neurologic products.
During Lynn's presentation, "Death by Grapefruit Juice,"
we will learn how seemingly "benign" substances can hurt
you. She will talk about the P450 system in the liver and how we
all need to appreciate that this system can fail us if we mix the
wrong things together. For instance, "why codeine is a great
analgesic for some but not for others" due to the P450 system.
And, on a lighter side, why maybe your summer drink should be a
Madras instead of a Seabreeze!

"And
What Did You Do on Your Vacation?"
Speaker: Member Volunteers
MEET
THE SPEAKERS:
Member Joe Dobrenski
and his wife Faith have volunteered to kick off our Fall season
with their summer experiences on a trip to Alaska. They are the
"openers" for the meeting. We hope others who have traveled
to some place other than "Yardville" in the past five
years will join in and tell us of their experiences as well.
With more and more members deciding to live the good life, it should
be beneficial to hear about some of their travels. Who knows, you
might get some good ideas!
So, anyone who took a vacation in the past five years and would
like to tell us about it, I'm sure we'll be "all ears."
Should you need an overhead or slide projector, just give me a call
ahead of time and we'll make one available.
MAY
ATTENDANCE:
Twenty-six members and two guests attended our May meeting. Member
Peter Van der Kam's presentation, "DAR AL DAWA...House of Medicine,"
was unusual, informative and interesting. We thank Peter for his
caring enough to volunteer. We also welcome our most recent new members,
Paul Schugsta and John Mink.

"DAR
AL DAWA...
House
of Medicine"
Peter van der Kam
MEET
THE SPEAKER:
PCCI member (and
sailor), Peter van der Kam, will take us to Amman, Jordan, where
he recently volunteered with the International Executive Service
Corps. (IESC). His assignment was to spend a month advising a Jordanian
pharmaceutical company, Dar Al Dawa...The House of Medicine. He
worked on restructuring their Marketing and Sales organization to
prepare the company for doing business in a changed World Trade
Organization environment.
Hear about the IESC and his experiences with the Jordanians. You'll
learn that they were very positive, pleasant to work with, and appreciative
of his efforts. Hear about some of his off-hours tours through the
land of the Old Testament. Peter was well-suited for the assignment
in that he brings a wealth of experience to anyone needing his help...here
or abroad.
His professional life has been devoted to several pharmaceutical
companies in the U.S. and overseas. In his resume, Peter lists management
positions with:
• |
Lavipharm Laboratories (Princeton, NJ) |
• |
Wyeth-Ayerst International (St. Davids, PA & Barcelona,
Spain) |
• |
Merck Sharp & Dohme International (Rahway, NJ, Caracas,
Venezuela, & Madrid, Spain) |
• |
Ciba-Geigy (Sydney, Australia). |
Interestingly, he has also served as Attache at the Royal Netherlands
Embassy in Caracas for a period of time.Where else but PCCI could
you ever hear such an experienced and widely traveled speaker. It'll
be another DON'T MISS presentation.

'TRIDENT'
The
Evolution of a Consulting Group
Speaker: Ray Freisheim
Sponsored by: Bill Tillman
MEET
THE SPEAKER:
Before founding
the Trident Group in 1989, Ray Freisheim, a friend to many of us,
held several positions at Menley James, the Consumer Products Division
of Smith Kline & French Labs. Ray is now a principal in the
Trident Group located in Springhouse, Pennsylvania.
The Trident Group operates as consultants to the pharmaceutical
and dietary supplement industries. It offers experienced principals
and consultants who help companies achieve their corporate goals
in the areas of: Product Development, Financial Sourcing, Affinity
Groups, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Strategic Management.
Trident consists of four divisions:
• |
Trident Consulting |
• |
Trimark Research |
• |
Trimark Manufacturing |
• |
The Ardent Group |
During Ray's career at Menley James, he enjoyed a rare combination
of senior executive experiences in both Marketing and R&D. He
has managed both prescription and non-prescription drug development,
domestic and international marketing, and the New Products function.
As a senior marketing executive, he was responsible for major product
entries in the cough/cold, analgesic, dermatological, and nutritional
markets. His last position with MenJ was Group Marketing Director.
Many of us will want to renew old ties with Ray as well as hear
how the Trident Group was formed. His informative presentation will
also include some fascinating case studies.

"So
What Do You Do In Your Free Time?"
-THE
PROGRAM...
continued by popular demand!-
All work and no play makes John a dull boy...
No truer words were ever spoken. And now that most of us have more
and more free time on our hands, we're finding more and more innovative
ways of spending it.Many volunteer their services; many have hobbies;
many travel; many play sports; many still consult, etc. None of
us want to rust away in our future years.
Some are looking for new interests. With such a rich assortment
of personalities, what better way to find new interests than to
hear how our friends and colleagues are spending their free time.
New ideas will abound.
This will be a give 'n take session. Tell us how you spend your
free time. At the same time, you'll learn how others spend theirs.
Who knows, you might get a new idea that can change your life.
Don't be bashful. Come to this informative PCCI special session
and share your interests with the group.
